I know, we’ve all seen the sad Keanu Reeves meme. He’s the butt of various acting jokes. But, the man is entertaining. He has some of the most iconic movies of all time. If you have seen his IMDB page, you might be wondering, what are the must see movies of his career?
Luckily for you, I’ve compiled a completely subjective list of my favorites. There are probably more than 8 gems, but this will get you started.
Keanu Reeves Movies
Point Break. You cannot have a list with Keanu Reeves without mentioning him as Johnny Utah in Point Break. It was also the pre losing his mind stage for Gary Busey. Patrick Swayze, surfing, skydiving and bank robberies. Damn, what else do you want from Hollywood? If it’s not in your collection of DVDs, you at least stop and watch when it hits a cable channel rotation.
Speed. Shoot the hostage. There’s a bomb on this bus. It’s an endless list of cliché action film tropes. Who cares, it’s a hell of a ride. It was also the breakout role for Sandra Bullock. Will it win over a fine cinema snob? Nope, but it was never meant to.
The Matrix. The movie that single-handedly pushed the boundaries of special effects. The lobby scene is a favorite of every action movie fan. Yeah Laurence Fishburne, let’s see how far this rabbit hole goes. Yes, we all were disappointed with the follow-up movies, but those are still worth watching.
Devils Advocate. I’m not sure if I’m putting this here because of Keanu Reeves or Al Pacino. Regardless, it’s one of my favorites, and hard to believe that it came out in 1997. Critics weren’t a fan, but seeing Pacino play the devil was great.
The Replacements. Hey, who wouldn’t want Shane Falco to show their team some heart. Maybe Texas A&M could have subbed him in on Saturday. Then again, you’d need Jon Favreau to attack on defense too. It’s a fun film, and always a blast to watch on a day when nothing else is on.
Constantine. With the new NBC series hitting this Friday, it does deserve a mention. I wonder how the movie would have done in this climate of comic book based characters. It would be interesting as nearly everything comic book related is box office gold these days. Granted, Constantine is a darker character, whereas Marvel, Sony and Warner Brothers have skewed their movies to a lighter tone. The film borrows some from the Hellblazer comics, but does the normal Hollywood move of ‘add their own spin.’
Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventures. You can’t have a Keanu post without mentioning Bill & Ted. What’s new about this movie is that it will be getting a third. No release date is known, but Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter will be reprising their roles. They are promising the film’s plot will be ‘most excellent’.
John Wick. Hitting theaters this Friday, Keanu is back in action roles, and seems to be going the route of Liam Neeson. Age a little bit and start kicking ass. The film’s trailers are awesome with the Keanu voicing over, ‘People keep asking if I’m back. Yeah, I’m thinking I’m back.” Yep, sign me up for Friday’s release. Check out the teaser for the movie below.
So, those are the 8 movies I want in my collection. How about you? What are the must have Keanu Reeves movies?
