Amazon has scooped up a lot of quality game developer talent in recent years. And, they are looking for more. A new job posting on Gamasutra shows Amazon is hiring for its first PC game.
Part of the listing reads:
The team is made of former Portal, World of Warcraft and BioShock creators, and we’re building a team of top talent for an ambitious new PC game project using the latest technology. Our team in Seattle has worked on a lot of other great titles like Half-Life 2, Left for Dead, Dota 2, Halo, Infamous, Shadows of Mordor and The Last of Us.
Words like “ambitious” and “latest technology” have me excited. That tells me Amazon is expanding beyond Fire TV and iOS games.
Amazon has created a massive foothold in the gaming industry. They bought Double Helix, the developer behind the fantastic Xbox One fighter Killer Instinct. Some of the key hires include former Splinter Cell and Far Cry designer Clint Hocking and Portal designer Kim Swift. Halo writer Eric Nylund also joined Amazon as its director of narrative design.
Oh, and they also acquired Twitch last August.
The pieces are here for Amazon to make a blockbuster game. Will this “ambitious new PC game” be the beginning? Who knows, but it certainly won’t be the end. Amazon has no problem throwing money at something until it works.
And, Amazon will not need to create its own game engine. That’s according to a Kotaku report in April. Amazon reportedly dropped tens of millions of dollars to license the CryEngine. The development engine is known for its jaw-dropping graphics.
Some of the games that have used CryEngine or are using it include Crysis 3, Ryse: Son of Rome, Kingdom Come: Deliverance and Star Citizen.
Whatever Amazon Game Studios ends up making will at least look good. Assuming the Kotaku report is accurate, that is. (I’m assuming it is. Kotaku’s Jason Schreier has a great track record with his exclusive reports)
No one knows exactly what Amazon has planned with their gaming ventures. But, you don’t buy Twitch, scoop up prominent developers and buy Double Helix without having plans that extend beyond Fire TV and mobile.
What kind of game do you want to see Amazon make? I don’t care about the genre, just make it original.
