I’m not sure who this is the bigger coup for; Doctor Who or Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark on Game of Thrones. Dr. Who is iconic British television, and Game of Thrones is HBO’s cash printing press.
Regardless, it’s the fans who win. Maisie Williams will appear as a guest star on the upcoming ninth season of Dr. Who. Peter Capaldi plays the titular doctor.
“I’m so excited to be working on ‘Doctor Who’ as it’s such a big and important part of British Culture,” Williams said in a press release. “I can’t wait to meet the cast and crew and start filming, especially as we’ll be shooting not too far from my home town.”
And, the show is thrilled to have the opportunity to trumpet they have secured one of the most beloved characters from the HBO series.
For now, there’s little known about her role on the ninth season. Lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat has said her character will follow the doctor around and ‘give him exactly the right sort of hell.’ Sounds like what Arya did to the Hound. Oh, and season 5 of Game of Thrones? Expect Arya to become even more badass.
No spoilers from me, but if you have read the books, you know where this is going. Maisie has already hinted at a ‘big ending’ for her at the end of season 5.
Clear your DVRs. The ninth season returns this fall, and follows the doctor and Clara Oswald on two new adventures. ‘The Girl Who Died’ by Jamie Matheson and Moffat, and ‘The Woman Who Lived ‘ by Catherine Tregenna.
If you are behind on your Dr. Who seasons, Netflix has your back. Get to binge watching.
