Marvel has the undisputed lead, but DC is looking to make a move for 2016 with the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The latest trailer is out, and it seems Jimmy Kimmel is grabbing every single major popcorn release for 2016. Was NBC and CBS blacklisted?
For a trailer, it’s jammed with information. Let’s get the biggest out of the way. We get our first look at Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman. I was hoping we’d hear some dialogue, but at least we get to see her in action.
Of course her reveal is offset by Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill exchange of ‘I thought she was with you.’
She’s there to save both of them from the one of the villains of the movie – Doomsday. It looks like this version may not be terrible. That would be a switch. The true villain? Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor.
I’ve watched the trailer a couple times, and his character is growing on me. At first I thought it was too over-the-top, but instead it feels like Snyder and company gave Eisenberg room to roam with the character. That might be a good thing. Look at how Heath Ledger’s Joker turned out. Is there a better on-screen comic book villain portrayal?
We also get treated to Clark Kent/Superman meeting Bruce Wayne/Batman for the first time. The valet forgot to grab both their egos at the door. Batman wins the first round with, “Maybe it’s the Gotham City in me. We just have a bad history with freaks dressed like clowns.”
Lex jumps into the fray while the two stare each other down. “Boys! Bruce Wayne meets Clark Kent. Ha! I love it,” he says. “I love bringing people together.”
One thing I noticed about the trailer is Snyder’s move away from making everything so dour. The movie has a bit of comedy, and the crazed Luthor portrayal by Jesse Eisenberg will bring its own comic relief.
Who haven’t we seen? Jason Momoa’s Arthur Curry/Aquaman and Ray Fisher’s Victor Stone/Cyborg. I think those two will make it into the TV spots or a possible final trailer in the new year.
Returning cast members include Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Amy Adams as Lois Lane and Diane Lane as Martha Kent. New members include Jeremy Irons as Alfred. Out of all the casting for the movie, I love Irons as Alfred.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice releases wide on March 25, 2016. You just thought theaters had a glut of comic book movies. It is going to be absurd for years to come.
