It’s not like we didn’t see this coming. Both stars were pushing the Free The Nipple Campaign, The campaign centers around gender equality and its anti-female oppression and censorship. Yeah, let’s just ignore people agreed to Instagram’s Terms of Service and it’s a private website.
Wait, you didn’t read the TOS? That’s your problem, so don’t blame Instagram. Both Miley Cyrus and Chelsea Handler posted topless pictures, which were later removed by the site. Cyrus posted a black and white image of herself in bed. The caption was actually self-censored: “Some lame ass deff gonna [flag] that but f–kkkkkkk it #practicewhatchupreach #FreeTheNipple #FreedatShit.”
Topless photo? That’s fine. Writing out the f-word? Break out the self-censorship. I’m sure it makes sense if you don’t think about it.
For comedian Chelsea Handler, the image is always about going for a laugh. Her topless photo was of her on the ski slope. Her caption centered around her dog: “I lost chunk on the mountain.”
Handler is no stranger from poking the Instagram bear. In November, she repeatedly posted topless photos of herself, which Instagram removed. Her idea was to poke fun at Vladimir Putin’s ridiculous topless horse photo. Handler remarked at the time: “Anything a man can do, a woman has the right to do better. #kremlin.”
Going to have to agree with her on that point. Instagram took the photos down, and Handler accused the site of being sexist. She briefly staged an Instagram boycott before coming back to the fastest growing social media site on the web.
So, what’s next? Expect people on Instagram to push the envelope of what Instagram will allow. Will the site bend to this new campaign. That’s not likely as the social media darling pivots to become a profit leader for Facebook – the owner of Instagram.
