Cuphead was an absolute joy to play in 2017, and the folks at Studio MDHR gave us our first look at their upcoming DLC today. Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course is bringing all new bosses, weapons, charms, and a new character – Ms. Chalice to Xbox One, Windows 10, and Nintendo Switch in 2020.
The delay to next year is a bummer, but I still can’t wait. I already know this DLC is going to deliver.
Co-Director Chad Moldenhauer cited making The Delicious Last Course the best it can be and doing so without crunch as the main reasons for the delay.
“While we initially announced a 2019 release date for the Delicious Last Course expansion, our highest priority is making sure this new adventure meets the meticulous level of care and quality we always strive for. We want to be absolutely certain that this next adventure feels at home in the world of Cuphead and is full of moments that surprise and delight players. Furthermore, the development of the original game taught us a great deal about the importance of making things in a way that’s healthy and sustainable for our team.”
The ongoing trend of developers moving away from crunch is great to see. Give them all the time they need. A lot of us have plenty of games in our backlog we could be going through in the meantime.
Moldenhauer also touched briefly on the new character coming to the Cuphead DLC. Ms. Chalice wasn’t designed only for the new isle coming. She’s also playable through the original Cuphead map too. One of her unique abilities (double jump) will breathe new life into Cuphead’s older levels. And make it easier since you won’t have to parry as much. You can catch her double jump in action at 0:20 in the trailer above.
No specific release date was revealed today outside of a 2020 window.
