There was a dark side to Disney’s acquisition of the Star Wars franchise from George Lucas. The cancellation of a Darth Maul game and Star Wars 1313. While the movie properties struggled, LucasArts was delivering classic games on the gaming front. Knights of the Old Republic, Rogue Squadron, the Jedi Knight series and Republic Commando are just some of the standout titles.

Darth Maul had the potential, but it wasn’t meant to be. Today, it lives on through concept art.

Concept artist Thomas Szakolczay gave us a glimpse at the work he did with LucasArts and Redfly Studios on the Darth Maul game. For about a year, developers worked on a Darth Maul story set after the Return of the Jedi. It “was meant to have a darker, grittier tone,” says Szakolczay. We’ll never get to romp around downtown Coruscant as Darth Maul, but we can still dream.

We’ll never see this version of Darth Maul come to life. Right now, we have to count on EA for our Star Wars gaming fix (outside of mobile games). But I find it hard to believe a dev team wouldn’t want to take a crack at it.
