We have a new Muslim / celebrity controversy. Selena Gomez, Gigi Hadid and Shay Mitchell were smiling and laughing at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, and posted it to social media. Selena Gomez went even further, flashing her ankle inside the mosque.
It’s a no-no, and most people should realize it by now.
The ankle baring photo has since been removed, after a barrage of comments cited the ankle baring was disrespectful. I get that, people should respect local customs. But being mad over the group photo of people smiling in a mosque?
It turns out you should be dour and somber when you worship, versus being happy you are in a house of God. If you want traditions, that’s great. Hold on to them. But slamming people for being happy to be in your place of worship? A bit much.
Selena Gomez has handlers, who should know the customs of being covered up. We may not agree with it, but respect the culture. We expect people to respect ours, so return the favor.
As for an uproar of smiling in a mosque? Come now.
Selena Gomez and her reps have yet to comment on the outcry, though the offending picture has been deleted.
