Wait a second…

A new album from Dr. Dre? Am I dreaming? Is this real life? We are finally getting some new music from Dre after a 16-year hiatus. Why the hell did I check that number? I’m getting old.

Before you get your hopes up this is the ‘Detox’ project oft-rumored for the past decade, you better check those hopes at the door. On the Beats 1 radio show, he announced Compton: A Soundtrack.

Yeah, Dr. Dre is going out with a soundtrack for the biopic releasing August 14. Speaking on the Apple Music radio show, he talked about the inspiration for the album.

“I was leaving the set, coming to the studio, and I felt myself just being so inspired by the movie that I started recording an album,” he said. “And I kept it under wraps. And the album is finished.”

The film chronicles the rise of NWA and is looking like one of the sleeper hits of the summer. Hey, I’m old enough to remember the NWA. Yep, I definitely ignored those parental guidance warnings…

No rap album is complete without serious collaborations. Dr. Dre’s new album is no different. Collabs include Jill Scott, Eminem, Snoop, Ice Cube and Kendrick Lamar. Hell, I’m already sold.

The album will be released on iTunes and Apple Music. We get it Apple; he works for you. Damn it, I have Spotify. 30-day free trial here I come.

Where is Detox?

It’s been a lingering question. It gets rumored that it’s close, but then disappears. Luckily, we finally got an answer on what the deal is with the rumored album:

Apple Wants a Piece of What Netflix and HBO are Selling

“The reason ‘Detox’ didn’t come out was because I didn’t like it,” he said. “I don’t think I did a good enough job, and I couldn’t do that to my fans, and I couldn’t do that to myself, to be perfectly honest with you. I just wasn’t feeling it.”

That works for me. If the artist doesn’t like it, don’t release it. I’m sure it softened the blow considering he’s one of the richest hip-hop stars and producers. At his level, you get to pick and choose what you want to do and when.

Up next for Dr. Dre is watching Corey Hawkins portray him on the silver screen in Straight Outta Compton.

For fans, the album drops Friday, so get your iTunes or Apple Music ready. Reportedly, this will be his grand finale. Do we buy that? It took him 16 years to make this one. I’d treat it as his retirement present to fans.
