The media treating Ebola like it’s World War Z not worrying you enough? Fear not, Elon Musk has you covered. The billionaire investor who brought us an online payment system, electric cars and space rockets is warning everyone about AI. “We need to be super careful with AI. Potentially more dangerous than nukes,” says Musk.

I don’t know. It’s hard to believe anything is more dangerous than nukes after John Oliver’s hilarious take on the U.S. nuclear arsenal. Musk’s warning came after reading Superintelligence: Paths, Strategies, Dangers by Nick bostrom. Musk may want everyone to be careful, but he also sees the money in AI and is a major investor in AI startup Vicarious. Vicarious’ primary focus is on creating AI-powered algorithms. Musk insists his investment in Vicarious is to understand the tech rather than make money. “I was also an investor in Deep Mind before Google acquired it and Vicarious. It’s not from the standpoint of actually trying to make any investment return,” Musk told CNBC back in June. I’m sure he didn’t shed a tear when Deep Mind was acquired. Musk followed up his tweet with another.

So, when is Skynet going to kill us all? We probably will never have to worry about it. I figured another few decades of phones getting bigger and smaller at random intervals before we have anything to worry about.

Interested in Superintelligence? The book will be published in English next month.
