Anyone who watched the Fallout 4 unveiling at E3 noticed the gunplay looked much sharper compared to Fallout 3. This is an area Game Director Todd Howard and the Fallout 4 team spent a lot of time addressing. In a video released yesterday, Howard touches on how combat is evolving with Fallout 4.
“If you were to pick it up and play it, it does feel like a modern shooter,” said Howard.
One of Bethesda’s main goals with Fallout 4 is creating a more competent combat system while also maintaining the RPG mechanics.
“We feel we can layer all of the role-playing and stat system on top of that [combat system],” said Howard.
While creating this new combat system, Bethesda also wanted to make sure everyone can play how they want. Whether that’s first-person, third-person or VATS.
So, how does Bethesda Game Studios tackle a fresh new combat system? Lucky for them, Bethesda Software happens to own one of the premier first-person shooter developers – iD Software.
Howard talks about how they asked iD Software for advice. “We called them like ‘alright, we’re gonna do this from scratch. Give us some tips.’”
It’s clear Bethesda is putting much more emphasis on combat with Fallout 4. And that’s good. Combat has always been one of Bethesda’s weakest areas. They are great at creating open-worlds. But, combat has been the one area that never felt that great – whether it’s Fallout 3 or The Elder Scrolls games.
Plus, how you play Fallout 4 is ultimately up to you. Do you want to play it like a more traditional shooter in first-person with ADS? Go for it. Are you a huge VATS fan? It’s there in all its glory.
Player freedom. It’s been a staple of Bethesda games for years, and it’s continuing with Fallout 4. And this time around, the gunplay gets a much-needed refresh.
In other Fallout 4 news, the second video of its S.P.E.C.I.A.L. video series just released. Today, it’s Perception.
The Perception stat covers various aspects of the game including the VAT system. It also covers stealing loot, explosives and assessing enemy targets.
Look for the next S.P.E.C.I.A.L. video next week.
