Tom Cruise is all we need, but Paramount wants to be sure we know this is Top Gun. A slowed down Top Gun theme? That’s affirm. Some sports on the beach? Roger that. Singing at the bar? Yep. Damn Paramount, is this a new movie or a remaster? Kidding aside, we have the Cruise missile shooting missiles once again. That’s more than enough.
Ok, those cockpit scenes are super slick. And it’s going to be hard to top that shot of four F/A-18 Super Hornets skimming the water. But don’t worry F-14 fans, we get a shot of the iconic aircraft banking to the left at the end of the trailer.
Tom Cruise isn’t the only returning face from the original. Val Kilmer is bringing back ‘Iceman.’ Come on Paramount, give me Maverick and Iceman as wingmen again.
New faces include Miles Teller (who plays Goose’s son), Ed Harris, Jon Hamm, Lewis Pullman, Jay Ellis, Charles Parnell, Bashir Salahuddin, Monica Barbaro, Glen Powell, and Danny Ramirez.
What’s the story with Top Gun: Maverick?
Plot details are slim, but Skydance (also working on Top Gun: Maverick) CEO David Ellison said in 2015 drone technology would play a role in the story. A lot can change in five years (six by the time the movie hits), but today’s trailer appears to back up this premise.
Here’s a line from Ed Harris’ character:
“The end is inevitable Maverick. Your kind is headed for extinction.”
Sounds like we’re getting Stealth, but what should be a much better version of it. I’m not the biggest fan of the drone angle, but I’m more than ready for another Top Gun.
Top Gun: Maverick hits theaters next summer.
