Damn it! A 24 without Jack Bauer is in the works at Fox. Our favorite CTU agent is gone along with the rest of the cast. That’s probably a good thing. Live Another Day was stretching the series well past its sell by date.

Fox is preparing for the return of 24 with an all-new cast and a pilot order. Don’t worry about structure changes. 24 will always be 24. Here’s how Fox describes the pilot:

“The pilot will feature an all-new cast of characters and retain the real-time, pulse-pounding, fast-paced format with split screens and complex interweaving storylines, with each episode representing one hour of an eventful day.”

Oh, you forgot the filler episodes and the idiotic side plots that add nothing to the story. For a busy day, some seasons got boring in a hurry.

Not everyone is leaving the franchise. Producers Howard Gordon, Manny Coto and Evan Katz will return as executive producers. It’s their job to make sure 24 stays true to the 24 formula.

Where the hell is Jack? Kiefer Sutherland has shed his final tear as Bauer and has walked off into the land of potentially better ratings. Sutherland has been cast in a new ABC thriller dubbed Designated Survivor. The premise is his character is thrust into the presidency after a catastrophic attack on the State of the Union address.

Sounds like someone read a few Tom Clancy novels.

24 Legacy Reboot

Who is our new Bauer? The lead will be a military hero ‘Eric Carter,’ who returns to the states with trouble in tow. That trouble – terrorists – leads him to CTU for help to save his life. Hang on, here’s where it goes 24.

As a thank you for saving his life, Eric stops what would be a series of large-scale terror attacks on the United States.

There we go. That’s the 24 I know and love.

One area the show is departing from is the lone-wolf special forces/ninja CTU agent hell-bent on saving the world. The pilot will feature what producers are calling a ‘two-hander.’ The Carter character will be paired with a female co-lead.

Fox orders reboot of 24 franchise

“There’s also a female co-lead who is a former head of CTU,” said Fox Television Chairman and CEO Dana Walden at the Television Critics Association in Pasadena on Friday. “It doesn’t feel like it is fully replicating the original in terms of how much Jack Bauer carried by himself, but it’s a very prominently featured lead.”

In addition to the new cast, there will be a time jump to bring us closer to today’s reality.

“It’s a new CTU, a new cast of characters,” she said. “It’s a completely different story in terms of the special ops groups that we’re focusing on. It’s a very contemporary feeling story about the potential to activate new sleeper cells in the United States and radicalizing Americans. It’s a whole new story. There are nods in the pilot to prior CTU agents, there are a couple photos that will feel reminiscent of the original, but no ongoing [returning] characters.”

24’s casting process is still ongoing with filming set to start this winter. Fox is looking at casting an African-American lead for the role of Eric Carter. I know Idris Elba is too big of a star, but how badass would that be? He’d cancel a few terrorist attacks.
