Gears of War is perhaps best known for its in-your-face multiplayer action. But there’s a loyal subset of Gears fans who love Horde. This is Gears’ take on the popular co-op modes we see in many of today’s shooters (COD Zombies, Halo Firefight, etc).
Horde bursted on to the scene in Gears of War 2. Up to five players faced off against 50 waves of the Locust Horde. Each wave is tougher than the one before it (wave 9 is tougher than wave 8). Each set of 10 waves also got more difficult.
Horde 2.0 brought defense building in Gears of War 3. You earned currency as you played and could use it to shore up defenses, buy weapons or purchase a Silverback.
Horde 3.0 evolves the Horde concept even further. We don’t know a lot about Horde, but that’s about to change. Big time. The Coalition is using PAX West as the venue for a massive Horde 3.0 unveiling.
Before I dive into what we’re going to see, let’s cover what we know real quick. Besides reportedly featuring some kind of class and skill system, we don’t know much. Gears of War 4’s Packs will also include Horde integration. Again, we don’t know the specifics, but I’m assuming it’s going to be similar to the REQ system seen in Halo 5: Guardians.
Alright, PAX West time. Those of you heading out there this weekend will get hands on time with Horde 3.0. A member of The Coalition team will walk you and four players through 30 minutes of Horde mode.
Those of you stuck at home? On Saturday, The Coalition is hosting a special race – First to 50. We’ll get to see two teams of “star Gears players” race each other to see who can reach wave 50 first. If you’ve been itching for Horde 3.0 info, don’t miss the Twitch stream starting at 6:30 pm PT (9:30 pm ET).
I’ll be tuning in. I’m curious to learn more about the Card system and how deeply it integrates with Horde 3.0.
Don’t want to wait until Saturday? Check out the IGN video below. They breakdown a 10-second teaser of Horde 3.0 gameplay.
It’s not much, but it does show placeable weapons and what looks like a mobile command post, or something similar.
New Gears of War 4 multiplayer mode, Arms Race
If multiplayer is more your thing, tune in Friday at 6:30 pm PT. The Coalition will unveil a new mode called Arms Race. They are coy with the details. I’m thinking some sort of objective-based mode. I’m hoping it’s something akin to Gun Game.
Finally, if you’re looking for more Gears of War 4 PC action – swing by the Alienware and Nvidia booths to try out Gears of War 4 in 4K.
Gears of War 4 action will be streamed on Friday (multiplayer/Arms Race), Saturday (Horde 3.0/Race to 50) and Sunday (more Horde 3.0 action) starting at 6:30 pm PT each night.
What do you want to see from Horde 3.0? I hope The Coalition goes into detail about Gears Packs and how much they affect Horde 3.0.
