When Gears of War: Ultimate Edition was first rumored, many of us were wondering if it was going to be a collection like Halo: Master Chief Collection. The official announcement came, and we learned Microsoft and The Coalition were remaking just the first Gears of War. After the Halo: MCC debacle, many cheered the move.
But, it turns out Gears of War will be getting the “Collection” treatment, through backward compatibility. If you play Gears of War: Ultimate Edition through the end of the year (August 25 – Dec 31), you will get access to Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3 and Gears of War: Judgement. The games will be available when the backward compatibility feature releases this Fall.
Horde mode on Xbox One? Hell yeah!
Today’s news will please thousands of Gears fans. Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3 were two of the most highly voted titles for backward compatibility.
Microsoft’s move to include Gears of War games with Ultimate Edition follows a trend from other developers. Ubisoft is including Rainbow Six Vegas and Vegas 2 with Rainbow Six: Siege. Bethesda did the same by including Fallout 3 with Fallout 4 pre-orders.
Microsoft talked a bit more about the Gears franchise coming to Xbox One:
All Gears of War titles will be supported on Backward Compatibility when it launches publicly this fall. This means if you own Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3 or Gears of War: Judgment on Xbox 360, you’ll be able to play them on your Xbox One and utilize some of your favorite next-gen features like Game DVR, Snap, screenshots and more. You can even keep all your previously-saved files, game add-ons, achievements and play with friends on Xbox Live no matter which Xbox console they’re on. For those of you in the Xbox One preview program who just can’t wait, the original Gears of War is available today in Backward Compatibility.
Backward compatibility is going to be awesome when it launches this Fall. I just hope all the games function properly. Plus, give us Red Dead Redemption Rockstar.
Which Gears of War title are you most pumped to play? Gears of War: Judgment’s multiplayer wasn’t for me, but I wouldn’t mind playing the story again.
Also, if you have tried backward compatibility via the preview program – let me know how it is.
