The launch trailer for the original Gears of War is one of my favorite game trailers of all time. The haunting visuals and the mystery surrounding the Locust Horde were perfectly meshed with ‘Mad World.’
With the launch of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition fast approaching, Microsoft opted to revisit a portion of the original trailer. Mad World returns as well as the opening scene.
The new trailer doesn’t top the original, but it’s still pretty damn epic. The marketing team opted to showcase the improved visuals of Ultimate Edition’s cutscenes versus recreating the original. A montage of the first game’s campaign moments plays after the opening scene. We see a massive Brumak chasing Marcus and Dom, General RAAM executing Kim and a few more scenes.
The trailer does its job of showing us how much better the original Gears of War looks on Xbox One. I would have liked The Coalition to use the improved visuals to do a complete remake of the trailer. Still, it’s a good trailer made even better with the return of ‘Mad World.’
Here’s the trailer from the original version of Gears of War.
Which one do you like better? For me? You just can’t top the original.
What’s new in Gears of War: Ultimate Edition
The biggest improvements are coming in the visual department. Huge improvements in graphics, 60 frames per second and 1080p resolution are the hallmarks of The Coalition’s remaster.
Multiplayer is back running on dedicated servers and skill-based matchmaking.
90 minutes of new single-player/co-op content is coming for those of you who never played the PC version.
Gears of War: Ultimate Edition also comes with its own ‘collection.’ If you play Gears of War: Ultimate Edition on Xbox Live from August 25th through December 31st, you’ll get access to Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3 and Gears of War: Judgment through Backward Compatibility when the feature launches this Fall. It’s a smart way to offer a Gears of War collection without redeveloping all of the games. You know 343 wishes the option was available to them before they developed the Halo: Master Chief Collection.
No improvements will be made to the other Gears of War titles. What you played on Xbox 360 is what you will play on Xbox One. Soon, Gears of War fans will be able to get their Horde mode fix on Xbox One.
Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is coming next week (August 25th) on Xbox One. A PC version is also coming, but no specific release date has been revealed yet.
