It still boggles my mind a new Ghost Recon hit without a multiplayer mode. Wildlands is terrific co-op fun with a group of friends, but the lack of multiplayer is glaring. Ghost Recon was the first game I dove into hard back in the Xbox 360 days. I made dozens of new friends during countless nights playing GRAW. More than ten years later and we don’t have PvP on a new Ghost Recon game.

Ubisoft already confirmed PvP DLC is in the works, but it’s comments made recently by Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot that has my attention.

The current gaming phenomenon known as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is sweeping across the industry. And Wall Street analysts are asking the big publishers their thoughts on it. Guillemot responded that the game doesn’t threaten Ubisoft’s current slate of games, but the publisher is interested in the gameplay it offers. Here’s the full quote from the recent earnings call.

“[Battlegrounds] is doing a fantastic job,” Guillemot said. “Rainbow Six continues to grow, and the time spent on the game is increasing, so we didn’t see any competition from that game. But we look at what those guys are doing, and it’s a type of gameplay that is very interesting and that maybe is something you’ll see in some of the DLCs we do on some of our games in the future.”

It wouldn’t shock me if the Wildlands devs are at least looking into the possibility of adding a Battlegrounds-like mode to the game. It’s the one that makes the most sense. Obviously, Rainbow Six: Siege isn’t built for it. The Division tried it with its Survival mode. It was fun too. A Battle Royale mode shouldn’t be too difficult since The Division already has a looting system built in.

But Wildlands makes the most sense. It has the open, diverse world. And the gunplay. The question is, can the game handle a multiplayer mode with a few dozen (or up to 100) people playing? We know The Division can based on the Dark Zone mode. But Wildlands is a lot more popular right now.

A Battlegrounds-like mode would be a hell of a lot more interesting than the 4v4 mode we’ve only seen a glimpse of. At 0:17 in the trailer below.

Ubisoft has two obvious options to push a Battlegrounds-like mode. If they’re smart, they try to get a mode out before Battlegrounds hits Xbox One later this year.

Plus, riffing off PUBG would generate a lot more excitement than a run-of-the-mill, structured multiplayer mode.

Hell, I’d go and buy Wildlands today if a Battle Royale mode was added. Just to play with all my friends who are missing out on PUBG.

PUBG is all the rage right now. When will the big AAA publishers take a crack at it? Publishers followed all the big trends before. WoW, COD, etc. They’ll follow this one too.

Which Ubisoft game would you like to see get the Battle Royale treatment? The Division or Wildlands?
