If you haven’t seen Pacific Rim, just turn on HBO. They go in cycles of showing the same movie over and over again. Until you can recite the thing from memory. While the movie was a bit of a disappointment stateside in 2013, the film more than made up for the lackluster performance overseas. So, we are getting a sequel.
Who isn’t pumped about giant robots battling Kaijus? Sign me up for that. Though, Gipsy Danger will need to be rebuilt. The Jaegers were all destroyed in the first movie. Who knows what madness will be on the big screen in 2017.
Casting wise, you have the two mains returning, Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi. Screenplay duties are being tasked to Guillermo Del Toro and Zak Penn. You will know Penn from his work on The Incredible Hulk screenplay.
If you are already pumped for the sequel, prepare to wait about three years. Release date has it it set for April 7, 2017. It is is a smart move by the studio to put it in April. They want it to be a blockbuster, but they have learned their lessons from the disasters of 2013. Quit filling up the marquee with numerous tentpole movies.
April gives the film a chance to stand on its own. Del Toro announced the film via YouTube, which can be seen below.
Here’s hoping we get another amazing spectacle. Del Toro looks to be onboard with creating something completely over-the-top. “I’m going for very new, very crazy ideas on the second one,” said Del Toro. “It’s very different, but you will get a really great spectacle.”
