I never thought any trailer would top the Star Wars: The Old Republic cinematic trailers, but Halo is giving them a run for their money today. Last night, the opening cinematic for Halo 5: Guardians landed, and it’s epic.

343 Industries’ vision for Spartans is finally here. In the lead up to Halo 4, the developers talked about conveying Master Chief’s “physicality.” Former 343 art director Kenneth Scott mentioned throwing “800 pounds of tank and jet fighter” into the character design.

“A Spartan tossing his chest plate should feel like an anvil dropping,” said Scott. “Putting on your helmet should feel like powering up an F-15E.”

Halo 5: Guardian’s opening cinematic takes this “physicality” to the next level. But, there’s also grace to Fireteam Osiris’ movements.

Now all we need is to be able to play this encounter instead of watching it. Imagine a Warthog-esque level, but running downhill blasting at everything with you and three friends. Now that would be epic.

Osiris Team tasked with Retrieving Halsey

This is how Halo 5: Guardians begins. For those not up to speed on the Halo story, Catherine Halsey is the scientist who created the SPARTAN-II Program. Master Chief and Blue Team are Spartan II’s. Fireteam Osiris is made up of Spartan IV’s.

As for Jul ‘Mdama? He goes by another name – The Didact’s Hand. ‘Mdama is primarily a book character, but he does show up in the fourth episode of Spartan Ops.

I’m hoping 343 fleshes out some of these characters a bit more through the game. Everyone shouldn’t have to read the books to know what is going on.

Halo 5: Guardians is coming exclusively to the Xbox One on October 27.
