It’s not a good week to be in the Marvel’s PR department. First you had Robert Downey Jr. walking out of an interview when the questions became personal. Today? Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner making sexist jokes about Black Widow, Scarlett Johansson’s character.
In an interview with DigitalSpy, Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) was asked what he thought about Black Widow? In a sarcastic response, he responded with, ‘she’s a slut!’
That had Evans cracking up at the joke, and he continued:
“I was going to say something along that line … a complete whore.”
The backlash came fast from social media, with people chiming in about the actors making sexist comments and accusing the two of ‘slut-shaming’ the Johansson’s character.
Are the remarks crude and sexist? Absolutely. But, context is key. The comments were made in a joking response to whether there’s a potential romance with either Captain America (Evans) or Hawkeye (Renner).
Twitter has lit up with comments calling out the actors and others pointing to the context of the comments.
The Renner/Evans video clip is evidence of how deeply ingrained sexist attitudes are in our culture and how oblivious men can be to that.

Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner made a joke. This is about context, people. Move on.

You can bet apologies will come from the two, and that should be the end of it.
I know the Marvel press team is hoping this ends the spate of news-making moments not about the upcoming release of Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Below is the interview in question. What do you think of the comments?
