Do you hear that buzzing noise? It’s the sound of casting reports for season 2 of True Detective. Nerdist snagged the exclusive that Jessica Chastain has been offered a leading role, but has yet to accept. Considering how hyped everyone was for their night of Rust Cohle and Marty, it is hard to believe that she would turn down the role.
Sure, it is a hard role to fill. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson pretty much locked up Emmy nominations with their season one performance. The question is now, where does the show head from here. A lot of chatter over the show was how they treated female characters. Having Chastain as a lead would kill that.
You probably know her from her turn as a CIA analyst in Zero Dark Thirty, the dramatization of the hunt and eventually takedown of Osama Bin Laden. She can more than hold her own on-screen. I for one, welcome the idea of here taking a lead role.
It was announced before the show began that each season would stand on its own, with a new cast of characters. So, if we can’t have Rust Cohle, we may as well get the best cast available.
If she does take the role, the question will be, who will be her partner. And, can they generate the same on-screen chemistry as McConaughey and Harrelson. That is going to one hell of a directorial challenge. Those two seemed tailor-made for the part.
There are rumors that the second season will focus on just one detective, so we may not get the bantering dialogue we loved from season one.
One issue that is going to crop up with Chastain is her busy schedule. She is already onboard with the Mission Impossible 5 movie and as Marilyn Monroe in the upcoming ‘Blonde.’
So, if she does take the role, who do you think should play opposite her? What are your thoughts on the possible casting news?
