Go figure. Katie Couric pulls off one of the best April Fools’ Day pranks. Maybe, I’m jaded with the Internet ruining the holiday. I don’t believe anything I read on the Internet on April. Hell, I thought Amazon was pulling a fast one with the Dash buttons. A part of me still thinks the company is.

Katie Couric appeared on the Late Late Show with James Corden. If you haven’t seen the show, the guests enter by coming down a staircase. Cue the falling down the stairs prank. Couric pulled this off perfectly, and damn near gave poor Corden a heart attack.

Appearing to fix her shoe, ‘Couric’ tripped and rolled down the stairs. With the crowd hushed, Corden rushed over to check on her, probably searching for the Life Alert.

Turns out, it was Katie Couric playing a solid prank. “Up here, James,” the real Couric said from atop the stairs while her stuntwoman revealed herself. “April Fool’s!”

Well played.

Corden fell over and played it up, clutching his heart. He then carried Couric to her chair. “That was the most terrifying thing,” the host said. “I can’t breathe. That’s my worst nightmare. We were talking about those stairs and I thought, ‘Oh my God. Katie Couric just died.'”

Was he in on the prank? The Late Late Show says no, but even if he was, it’s still a solid one.

If the Yahoo News gig doesn’t work out, Life Alert could use Katie Couric in a new ad.

While I was a staunch fan of Craig Ferguson, I have to give James Corden his due. Entering his second week, he’s following the Jimmy Fallon template. Don’t aim for just traditional ratings. It’s all about spreading the show via online video. This prank, coupled with the Tom Hanks skit last week has started the show off on the right foot.

If you missed the Tom Hanks skit, he teamed with Corben to go through his filmography in less than 7 minutes. Everything from Forrest Gump to Saving Private Ryan.
