Looks like the combination of Seth Rogen and Zac Efron is a winning one. Unseating a summer blockbuster with a comedy is pretty rare, but not unheard of. You just have to tag it with a R rating. The Hangover, Ted and Heat were all R rated comedies that went up against box office juggernauts and won.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 saw a precipitous drop after its first weekend atop the box office chart. After posting a $90 million opening weekend, it dropped to $37 million for its second weekend. It looks like it will have to look internationally for big numbers. Neighbors came in and took the number one spot with $51 million.
Even though Spider-Man is losing his top spot in the U.S., the film has already locked in $550 million in global ticket sales. Neighbors was helped by the smart marketing and being well received by critics. It earned a fresh rating of 74 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, while Spider-Man earned a rotten rating of 54 percent.
Neighbors stars Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne as new parents that have to go to battle with a fraternity that moved in next door. It is the typical comedy from Seth Rogen, gross-out gags along with goofball humor. But it works for the film.
The top five was rounded out by The Other Woman, Heaven is for Real and Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier. Neighbors should enjoy its top spot for this week. The summer blockbuster train is just getting started. Next up with be the guaranteed mega hit, X-Men: Days of Future Past.
Now the numbers on that will be out of this world thanks to a cast that contains nearly every Hollywood A-lister. Plus, the Sentinels make their appearance. What comic book fan hasn’t been clamoring for that?
