Hey, good news for Nintendo for a change. UK retail tracking company GFK Chart-Track announced earlier today that Mario Kart 8’s release on Friday propelled Wii U sales more than 600% in the UK.
Nintendo’s been preaching that “the fate of a video game system is often influenced greatly by the introduction of a single title.” Iwata said this to analysts after the company’s recent poor financial performance. And, he is right. The original Xbox is the best example with Halo: Combat Evolved. Maybe Mario Kart 8 is that game.
No specific sales figures were given besides the 666% increase. Chart-Track did say that 82% of total Mario Kart 8 sales came from the Mario Kart 8 bundle.
With the massive jump in sales, Mario Kart 8 is now the best-selling first week title for any Wii U game since the Wii U’s launch in 2012.
Nintendo could give more concrete details when the NPD Group announces industry sales for May next week. We’ll see if they toot their own horn a bit. They deserve it. It’s been a rough few years for Nintendo.
Mario Kart 8 released on May 30, so the NPD data will only cover two days’ of sales.
Besides Mario Kart 8, here’s the top 5 selling titles in the UK last week. Watch Dogs took the number 1 spot followed by Mario Kart 8. Wolfenstein: The New Order is still holding up well at the number 3 spot followed by FIFA 14 and Minecraft: PS3 Edition.
