Chelsea Handler, known for her late-night show on E!, has a new employer. Handler has finalized a deal with Netflix that includes a stand-up special plus four docu-comedy specials with the streaming service.
“The Internet has disrupted many of the conventions of traditional television and together with Chelsea Handler, Netflix is looking forward to reimagining the late night talk show for the on-demand generation, starting with the late night part,” said Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, Ted Sarandos, in a statement.
What kind of show can we expect from Chandler and Netflix? E! owns the format for Chelsea Lately. Netflix says her new talk show will have an updated format, but still feature her takes on pop culture and her interviewing style.
When can you see the new talk show? It’s going to be a while. Netflix is targeting early 2016 for the debut. While her show is still a ways off, Chandler will launch the first comedy special of the deal on October 10. This special will be from here current comedy tour and will be filmed at Chicago’s Harris Theater this Friday.
2015 will see her produce four docu-comedy specials before the talk show’s debut. These specials will follow Chandler around as she tries to better understand NASCAR, the NBA Draft, Silicon Valley and politics. Easy enough topics to poke fun at.
Here’s what Chandler said about her deal with Netflix.
“I wanted to sit with the cool kids at lunch, so I approached Netflix to make sure they were as cool as I thought they were, and when I confirmed my suspicions, like with any other future lover, I made my move. I’m more excited than I’ve been in a while, and the team at Netflix is the most forward thinking, alert group I’ve sat down with in ages. No offense to the Shahs Of Sunset.”
Netflix continues to be a trendsetter in the streaming arena. They made big splashes with original content in recent years, now they’re going after late night talk shows.
