I have some bad news for the Star Wars fans heading to Disney’s D23 fan convention this week. J.J. Abrams tells Entertainment Weekly there won’t be any new footage there. “It is true, we are showing no footage, behind the scenes or otherwise,” says Abrams. “In the fall, there’ll be a trailer.”

It sucks for fans who were expecting something new.

The last full trailer we saw for Star Wars: The Force Awakens was back in April at the Star Wars Celebration Expo. Since then, we’ve seen some behind the scenes footage and an extra scene in a Korean Star Wars trailer.

Star Wars First Order

A great look at the First Order. It looks like Captain Phasma in the chrome helmet flanked by the two Stormtroopers. I really love the new TIE Fighter design. There also appears to be AT-AT variants or other large land vehicle on the right side behind a column of TIE Fighters.

I’m a bit torn on Abrams’ comments. The Star Wars nerd in me wants all the footage I can get. But, I also don’t want all the best scenes spoiled. A problem many movies run into as marketing ramps up is they release trailer after trailer. How many times have you seen a movie only to come out and realize you saw all the best scenes weeks before?

For Disney and Abrams, the lack of footage shouldn’t be surprising. We are still about four months away from the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Another trailer now would be a bit too earlier. The marketing blitz will get fired up later this year.

I’m sure Disney will make up for the lack of footage now with an all-out blitz in October, November and December.

Just one request Disney. Keep some of the best scenes under wraps.

While there may not be new Star Wars: The Force Awakens footage at D23, other Disney properties will be out in full force. Expect news from Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

D23’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens panel – Worlds, Galaxies and Universes: Live Action at The Walt Disney Studios – will be on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in Hall D23.

Maybe we’ll hear a few new tidbits about Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One. If you haven’t been keeping up with your Star Wars news, Rogue One is set between Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: A New Hope. It follows a group of resistance fighters as they steal the plans to the Death Star.

I’ll keep you updated with any news about Star Wars from the D23 Expo. We might not see new footage, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we learn something new about Star Wars on Saturday.
