“Our business with Forza over the last six, seven years has been great for us,” says Fulton. “It remains the cornerstone of our business – we’re not running away from racing, we still feel passionate about making new games and delivering new experiences for our players.”
But Playground Games also wants to challenge themselves to make something different. And a new studio near its current headquarters will tackle this new game. Details are understandably slim, but Playground Games told GamesIndustry.biz it will be open world. And, it will not be a racing game.
Ok, now you have my attention. Playground Games meshed open world and racing beautifully in the Horizon series. It’ll be fun watching the studio take its open world expertise and try something new.
We’ve seen devs, most notably Guerilla Games, shift from franchises they’re known for to try something new. Granted, going from Killzone to Horizon: Zero Dawn is a much more radical shift than what Playground Games is doing. The folks behind Forza Horizon already know how to do an open world. Their challenge will be designing around whatever genre they decide to choose past that.
“We feel like we’ve become pretty good at racing games over the years,” says Fulton. “We can always get better, we can always strive to get better but we’d love to prove ourselves in a different genre. That’s another goal of Project 2, to allow us to do that. We’re going to need to hire some very talented people with experience that we don’t have.”
Plus, we’ll still get the inevitable Forza Horizon 4. It’s a win-win for everyone.
What type of genre would you like to see in Project 2?
Shooter? RPG? Single-player? Co-op heavy? The beauty of open world is the genres are near limitless. I wouldn’t mind seeing Playground Games do the impossible for the open world survival genre. Create a polished game.
I’ve poured hundreds of hours into games like H1Z1, the DayZ mod, ARK and so on. The biggest problem with all of them is they stay in perpetual early access. These games are popular and a blast to play, but I long for the day when we finally get one that is a finished, polished product.
Whatever Playground Games ends up doing, we know it will look stunning. Hell, I’m just pumped their making a brand new game.
