Sony issued a press release touting their latest Playstation 4 sales milestone earlier today. Playstation 4 sales have pushed past 5.3 million units worldwide as of February 8th. The latest sales data comes about a week after NPD Group data indicated the Playstation 4 was the best-selling console in the U.S. in January.
Specific numbers for January were not released, but the Playstation 4 nearly outsold the Xbox One by 2-to-1. A huge win for Sony. Factor in launching in more international markets than the Xbox One and it’s not hard to see why Playstation 4 has the early lead. That, and it’s $100 cheaper.
“I am thrilled that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play throughout and beyond the holiday season,” said Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc in a press statement.. “We are delighted that according to the NPD Group’s latest data, PS4 was January’s top-selling console in the United States.
House added, “February 22 sees the launch of PS4 in Japan, and I’m looking forward to Japanese fans sharing the excitement of the deep social capabilities and entertainment experiences only possible on PS4.”
While Microsoft is behind Sony in the console selling wars, their numbers are impressive as well. In its latest earnings release, Microsoft reported 3.9 million Xbox Ones sold for the quarter ending Dec. 31.
Microsoft will fire the first software salvo of 2014 with the release of Titanfall on March 11. Sony will follow that up with Infamous: Second Son on March 21.
