Three years ago, Prey 2 had one of the best cinematic trailers of E3 2011. Today, we get final confirmation that the title will never see the light of day.
CNET received the news at PAX Australia from Bethesda’s VP Pete Hines. He told them, “It was game we believed in, but we never felt that it got to where it needed to be – we never saw a path to success if we finished it,” Hines said.
The franchise doesn’t sound dead, though. Hines also said “It’s a franchise we still believe we can do something with – we just need to see what that something is.”
Prey 2’s development cycle was an extremely bumpy road to today’s conclusion. Human Head Studios was the team initially working on the game when it was announced in 2011. By May 2013, Kotaku reported rumors that development had shifted to Arkane Austin. A few months later (August) Kotaku reported on leaked emails that indicate that Arkane Austin was indeed developing Prey 2.
While Bethesda refused to confirm who was working on the title, none of that matters today. Prey 2 is dead.
