Is Apple aiming bigger than a watch? A report from Financial Times indicates they are. Apple is reportedly hiring experts in automotive technology and car design to work at a new secret research lab. Financial Times cites “several people familiar with the company.”

This lines up with a similar report from Business Insider where an Apple employee told them this new secret project will “give Tesla a run for its money.”

The obvious takeaway from this news is that Apple is working on a car. It seems hard to believe. Apple as a car manufacturer? That’s a far cry from iPhones and iPads. Then again, why hire automotive and car design experts. That doesn’t make sense if you are just aiming for more integration between iOS and a car.

Whatever it is, I’m sure it will look sleek. Financial Times says some of the top managers from Apple’s iPhone unit are leading the new secret project.

The traditional tech company is changing. Google went from a search engine to driverless tech, AI and robotics. Apple appears to be trying to something similar.

Diversification seems to be the end goal with the biggest tech companies.

Apple has the money to do pretty much whatever they want. With $178 billion in cash, they could just outright buy Tesla ($25.5 billion market cap) if they wanted to.

What do you think? Apple Car? Deeper integration? Something completely new and different that will blow us away? Let me know in the comments below.
