I got my first taste of Rocket League when it hit PlayStation Plus in July 2015. A free game with rocket-boosted cars slamming into a giant soccer ball? I figured I would at least try it. Who knew one of the best games I have ever played would be free?

I rushed to tell my friends about it. We all grabbed it for PC. 18 months later and not a week goes by where I don’t jump on Rocket League for a few hours.

Going the PlayStation Plus route was a gamble. Rocket League was an instant success. The marketing dollars from Sony via PlayStation Plus paled in comparison to the money Psyonix could have made if they sold the game from the get go. Then again, PlayStation Plus gave them the word of mouth needed to turn Rocket League into the juggernaut it is today.

Did going the PlayStation Plus route hamper their PS4 sales? My first thought was yes. But, data from Sony is a resounding no. The PlayStation Store’s Top Downloads of 2016 were revealed today.

Rocket League stands at the top. It was already six months old, offered for free on PlayStation Plus and competed with the likes of The Division, Battlefield 1, Minecraft and Overwatch. Still, Rocket League beat all them out with more downloads.

The folks at Psyonix are living the dream. A game with universal acclaim played by millions.

Every few days, me and a buddy jump on to try to keep our Superstar ranking on Doubles. We laugh at sweet goals and rage when the other team gets a lucky bounce. Rocket League is the perfect game. Matches are short, yet I can play for hours. And nothing will ever beat the feeling of nailing a sick pass to a teammate for a goal. Or, a heart pounding save in overtime.

Alright, enough about me loving Rocket League. Let’s take a look at the other top PS4 games in 2016.

Rocket League
Battlefield 1
Minecraft
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
The Division
GTA V
Overwatch
Battlefield 4
No Man’s Sky
FIFA 17
NBA 2K17
Need for Speed
Star Wars Battlefront
Rainbow Six Siege
Battlefield Hardline
Madden NFL 17
Skyrim Special Edition
Uncharted 4
The Last of Us Remastered
Final Fantasy XV

I love seeing Rainbow Six Siege on the list. The forgotten tactical shooter genre (on consoles) was revived last December with one of its best entries ever. The pressure is on Ubisoft to deliver again with Ghost Recon: Wildlands. If Wildlands is even half as good as Siege, I’ll be set.

Three Battlefield games on the list is a surprise. And Uncharted 4 feels low there. Then again, these are downloads. It probably doesn’t factor in bundles.

Any games up there a surprise? Any of them you haven’t played? And don’t say Rocket League.
