We all saw the two-second teaser of Rogue One last night. The first trailer dropped this morning, and all I have to say is WOW! Another epic, chill-inducing Star Wars trailer.
Rogue One appears to be a much more ‘grounded’ take on Star Wars. Gone is the Force (for the most part). In its place, we will see the events that lead up to the beginning of A New Hope. Ever wonder how exactly R2-D2 got the Death Star plans? Rogue One shows us.
I’ve seen the trailer four times already. My favorite moment? It has to be the AT-ATs blasting at our heroes on a tropical world. Immediate goose bumps on that one. The sheer scale of the Death Star was another great moment. I didn’t think the Rogue One trailer could top The Force Awakens, but it does. Ok, that’s probably the Star Wars fanboy in me (it is), but it’s still a great trailer.
Let’s break down what we just watched.
Felicity Jones plays Jyn Erso. And she hasn’t been able to avoid Imperial entanglements. A character reads off her arrest record which includes forgery of Imperial documents, possession of stolen goods, aggravated assault and so on.
Mon Mothma takes a turn at criticizing Jyn and says she’s reckless, aggressive and undisciplined.
We also see Diego Luna’s character nearby listening to Mon Mothma describe Jyn’s life.
Jyn’s response? “This is a rebellion, isn’t it? I rebel.”
During this sequence, we also see a droid behind her. Keep an eye on the droid, we’ll see it again later.
It might seem like they are criticizing Jyn for her arrest record, but she is just the type of person they are looking for. “We have a mission for you.” And that mission becomes apparent in the next image.
An Imperial Star Destroyer looking tiny against the backdrop of the Death Star. We also see the ‘dish’ being placed on the Death Star. “A weapons test is imminent and we need to know what it is and how to destroy it,” says Mon Mothma.
As battle sirens blare, we see Rebel forces begin to move out.
Here’s a look at Ben Mendelsohn playing a high-ranking member of the Imperials. Note the blaster pistol in his hands. He’s not happy with someone.
The next scene shows a Hover Tank roll by with specialized troopers driving it. We also see more traditional Stormtroopers escorting it on the ground.
We then see a quick sequence of Forest Whitaker’s character and the Shadow Troopers (?) we saw in last night’s brief teaser.
“What will you do when they catch you?” says Whittaker’s character. The next part shows captured X-Wing pilots being escorted by Imperial forces.
Remember the droid from earlier in the trailer? We see it again following Jyn as they run. This looks like the droid Alan Tudyk is playing.
It appears a group of Stormtroopers is in pursuit. Maybe. You can never really tell with the way trailers are edited together these days. These Stormtroopers could be running towards something else.
Here’s Donnie Yen’s character kicking some Stormtrooper ass with a stick.
Next up is a squad of Shadow Troopers (?) firing on the beach.
An Imperial transport explodes.
Rebels appear to be responsible with one soldier reacting to the explosion.
Ben Mendelsohn’s character walking towards the explosion.
The next scene is one of the more interesting ones to speculate about.
The Emperor’s Royal Guards are a clear indication the Emperor is about to make an appearance. They are never seen outside his presence. But who is the hooded figure? You might think it’s Darth Vader, but we’ve never seen him wearing a hood. Or is this the Emperor? And if it is him, why is he kneeling at the last part of the scene?
Forest Whitaker’s next lines are ominous. “If you continue to fight, what will you become?”
The next sequence shows Jian Wen’s character running around with some serious hardware.
And the AT-ATs. This shot is epic.
In the last shot, we see Jyn dressed as an Imperial. Maybe she’s infiltrating the Death Star?
Is Darth Vader breathing at the end? Ok, I saw this on Making Star Wars, and the more I listen – the more it sounds like it. Especially when Whittaker says “become.” Is that Darth Vader breathing (exhaling) right there? Sure as hell sounds like it.
This trailer blew me away. Granted, it was never going to take much for me to get pumped. But the shots of the AT-AT and Death Star were incredible. I was always a huge fan of the non-Jedi Star Wars books (X-Wing series, Wraith Squadron) and Rogue One is hitting all the right notes for me.
What did you think of the trailer? Do you think that’s Darth Vader breathing at the end, or we all just want it to be?
