Nintendo just issued a statement announcing that President Satoru Iwata has passed away. He was 55.

The brief statement reads:

Nintendo Co., Ltd. deeply regrets to announce that President Satoru Iwata passed away on July 11, 2015 due to a bile duct growth.

He first joined the company in 1983 and helped design games including Kirby and Earthbound. Iwata became a Director of the company in June 2000. In 2002, he was appointed as just the fourth President of Nintendo.

It’s a sad day for the gaming family. We have lost a legend.
