You definitely cannot accuse the Robertson family (Duck Dynasty) of not being capitalist. If there’s a way to make money off the hit reality show, Duck Dynasty, they are onboard. This includes turning the show into a Vegas musical. Why? I think the Broadway producer Michael David (Jersey Boys) lost a bet.
The show, set to hit in February, will debut at the Rio Hotel and Casino. Right now, the hotel’s show list includes the Chippendales and Penn & Teller. Yep, when I think evangelical family reality show, I associate it with a Chippendales show.
Michael David’s show will tell the story of ‘rags to riches’ of the Duck Dynasty clan. It is already courting some controversy in Broadway circles. Broadway is known for its friendliness to the LGBT community. Duck Dynasty was hit with a major controversy over Phil Robertson’s comments about gay people.
Speaking to the New York Times, Michael David aimed to tamp down the controversy, saying theater should tell all stories. “The show will end up challenging the views and assumptions of people across the political spectrum, more than most theater does. The Robertsons are so unusual, their story so juicy, and theater shouldn’t be limited to telling stories about people you resemble or revere.”
The Duck Commander Family Musical will also take on Robertson’s comments, so it could turn out as a teachable moment. As for the show’s music? It will feature a 14-song score of show tunes, blues and country.
If you are wondering when the next Duck Dynasty season starts, set your DVR for next Wednesday on A&E. This will be the seventh season of the popular reality show.
Those wanting ticket information, stay tuned. The Rio should be releasing more details soon.
