Sony Online Entertainment is no longer part of Sony. The developer has been acquired from Sony by investment firm Columbus Nova.

Sony Online Entertainment has been renamed Daybreak Game Company.

The community manager for H1Z1 announced the move on Reddit earlier today. SOE_Legion (Reddit name) had this to say about the developer’s new name, “This name embodies who we are as an organization, and is a nod to the passion and dedication of our employees and players. It is also representative of our vision to approach each new day as an opportunity to move gaming forward.”

He went on to say, “It will be business as usual and all SOE games will continue on their current path of development and operation. In fact, we expect to have even more resources available to us as a result of this acquisition. It also means new exciting developments for our existing IP and games as we can now fully embrace the multi-platform world we are living in.”

The move is a bit of a surprise. But, Sony Online Entertainment was always a weird developer for Sony. They didn’t seem to tie into the Playstation brand all that well. Their games were always PC first and then Playstation much later.

Plus, Sony as a company is always on the lookout for additional capital. Offloading Sony Online Entertainment was smart from a vision and business standpoint.

John Smedley, president of Daybreak Game Company, expressed excitement at being able to go multiplatform.

I would imagine DC Universe Online and Planetside 2 are high on the list to getting on Xbox One. Smedley did say they will be finishing H1Z1 on PC first before porting to consoles.

What do you think of Sony’s move? I think it’s a good idea for what they are doing. It lets them consolidate even more around their successful PS4 developers. Let me know that you think in the comments below.
