SpaceX is changing what rockets can do, and the rockets look good doing it. But what about space suits? We’ve seen astronauts perform spacewalks for decades. And the space suits haven’t changed all that much. Sure, they get the job done – but they don’t look that great.

SpaceX is changing that. And to help that change, the private space company hired a costume designer who knows a thing or two about creating badass sci-fi gear.

You probably don’t recognize Jose Fernandez’s name, but you watch the movies he’s been involved with. Fernandez worked on costumes for several recent sci-fi movies, some good and some bad. But the costumes were top notch. Oblivion, Iron Man, The Avengers, Jupiter Ascending and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Fernandez had a hand in bringing the costumes from these movies to life.

But his work took a real-life turn recently. Fernandez talked about working with SpaceX and Elon Musk in a recent sit down with Bleep.

“I worked with him for six months and at the end of that, we created a suit that they are now reverse-engineering to make functional for flight. The look they are going to unveil in the next few months is something we created here in the studio. He wanted it to look stylish. It had to be practical but also needed to look great. It’s pretty bad ass. He kept saying, “Anyone looks better in a tux, no matter what size or shape they are,” and when people put this space suit on, he wants them to look better than they did without it, like a tux. You look heroic in it. It’s an iconic thing be a part of.”

And that’s why the private space companies like SpaceX are awesome. They can pour money into spacesuits looking ‘badass.’ While NASA has to scrounge for every penny, private space companies can go out and hire the guy that worked on Iron Man.

We don’t have a specific date on when we might see the new spacesuits. I’m hoping for something along the lines of the spacesuits from The Martian.

After taking a peek at SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule, you can see why Elon Musk wants SpaceX folks to look good.

You can’t have a badass ride without some badass duds.
