This will make it on the next crazy medical stories. A radiology resident in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia was shocked to find an X-ray of a toddler’s esophagus. He found a perfectly detailed Spongebob Squarepants toy inside the boy’s esophagus.
Dr. Ghofran Ageely, a radiology resident at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, set the stage of the case. The parents of the 16-month old boy brought him to the hospital after suspecting he swallowed something. A round of X-rays were performed.
The side view looked like his sister’s hairpin, but on the the front view the doctor had a perfect view of a smiling Spongebob. Speaking to LiveScience, he expressed his surprise.
“‘SpongeBob,’ I screamed!!! I was amazed by the visible details. You can see his freckles, shoes and fingers…AMAZING.” See, even radiologists love some Nickelodeon. The pendant belonged to his sister and was removed.
Once the kid was cleared was sent home, Ageely shared the X-ray images on Radiopaedia.org – think Wikipedia for radiologists to share and discuss cases. Or, to have the ‘you won’t believe what I found today’ moment.
The reason the x-ray showed so well was due to the painted face was outlined with ridges on the metal pendant.
All is fine. The boy is well, and we get another crazy medical case. We definitely need to watch the bottomless pits we call kids.
