Star Wars: Battlefront III. What could have been.
Over the weekend, just over 30 minutes of gameplay footage for Star Wars: Battlefront III surfaced on YouTube. Star Wars: Battlefront III was being developed by TimeSplitters developer Free Radical Design years ago. The footage below looks very rough, but remember, this game was being developed a while ago and was in a pre-alpha state.
The videos show off several environments, vehicles and playable characters. Multiple well-known characters were expected to be in the title including Princess Leia, Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian, Anakin Skywalker, Luke Skywalker, Yoda, Obi-Wan, Padme and others.
While never officially announced, Battlefront III ended up in the vaporware bin and Free Radical Design was acquired by Crytek UK.
Star Wars: Battlefront III joins several other Star Wars games that were never released including Star Wars 1313 (this one still hurts) and Rogue Squadron Wii.
What’s next for Star Wars games? EA has partnered with Disney to develop Star Wars titles. Star Wars: Battlefront is currently in development at DICE (Battlefield developer). I would say the Battlefield 4 launch debacle will give me pause about DICE’s next game, but it’s Star Wars. I’ll be there day one.
We should get our first in-depth look at Battlefront in the first half of 2015.
