Up for auction is the 1963 Triumph Bonneville Desert Sled. Looking at the pictures, it was never big on looks. That was the point. Its famous owner was joined by an equally famous motorcycle racer.
Bud Ekins, stunt-double and friend to the actor heavily modified the bike for off-road racing. The specialized bike was then handed off to another friend, Kenny Howard, for a paint job.
If you’re an enthusiast, you know the name Kenny Howard. He’s also known as Von Dutch, famous for his pinstriping on bikes. Von Dutch ditched his trademark pinstripes for a more understated look. Besides, off-road racing and custom pinstriping don’t exactly go hand-in-hand.
Bonhams Steve McQueen Auction
For those in the Vegas area, the auction will take place as part of the 6th annual Las Vegas Motorcycle Auction. Want to have a look? The preview is open to the public on January 6 from 9 am – 6 pm.
The auction will take place at 11 am on Thursday, January 7 at the Bally’s Hotel and Casino.
Initial estimates are for the motorcycle to hit the $50,000-$60,000 mark. The Hollywood pedigree could push it north of the figure as collectors descend upon Las Vegas.
If your bank account supports it, the motorcycle will make for one hell of a display. Me? I’ll stick to admiring and maybe one day grab one of the new Triumph bikes.
