Hope you’re steeled for some serious comic book overload. CBS has tapped Melissa Benoist as Supergirl set to debut this fall. The network has already gave the drama a series order, so expect the cast to finalize quickly.
You should recognize the face if you’re a Glee fan. Benoist starred alongside Andy Mientus and The Flash’s Grant Gustin. She also starred alongside Miles Teller – who stars in Fantastic Four – as Whiplash.
Supergirl has some serious television comic book pedigree. Greg Berlanti will be behind the scenes, having developed both The Flash and Arrow – two remarkably impressive CW shows.
Of course, the show is getting the normal network spin. They don’t want to be the ‘typical’ superhero production. Yeah, cause that business model has been complete crap. CBS Entertainment Chairwoman Nina Tassler explained the network’s thoughts.
“There’s a human drama there,” she said. “We know there are so many superhero characters portrayed in films, but I think we’re watching an evolution with regard to the way they’re portrayed.
“There’s a humanity. They are flawed. There’s a relatability, and I think for our network right now, what we did respond to was the character’s humanity.”
Sure, just slap it after a NCIS installment and collect the advertising revenue.
Also appearing in the Supergirl show will be Hank Henshaw, Jimmy Olsen and peripheral / supporting Superman characters.
What do you think of the casting? Are we looking at the next CBS hit?
