Saddle up hoss. Syfy is gifting us another season The Expanse – one of the best sci-fi shows on television. Hell, it is the best. It looks like the Netflix deal is paying off for fans of the Rocinante and its crew. And come on, who doesn’t love Amos?
The news comes on the heels of ‘Pyre,’ which saw the shifting loyalties in the Belt and the introduction of Prax. It’s impressive how well the writers have integrated the story from the novels (must reads) into one-hour blocks of television. Sure, it deviates from the books here and there, but the overall narrative sticks to the script.
NBCUniversal, Syfy’s parent company, had nothing but praise for the show:
“The Expanse is a gorgeous, thrilling, emotional series that has quite simply raised the bar for science fiction on television,” said Chris McCumber, president of entertainment networks at NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment. “We, along with the fans, are looking forward to continuing the journey with our partners at Alcon Television Group and the series’ brilliant cast and crew.”
Be honest Chris. You didn’t want Amos pissed off. If he fights you, who is going to run the entertainment networks at NBC?
The 13-episode season joins the final season of 12 Monkeys in 2018. It still blows my mind the turnaround Syfy pulled. While we laud Netflix and its original programming, look at Syfy. It’s stable of original content keeps sci-fi fans tuning in each week. The Expanse, 12 Monkeys, Dark Matter, Killjoys, The Magicians and the list goes on.
Now that we know The Expanse has secured a third season, it offers up tons of questions on how the writers will weave the narratives past book two into next year. What will we see on Venus? Beyond? Those who have read the books know. And it’ll make for one hell of a ride.
