Some may criticize the lack of content in Titanfall, but Respawn’s post-launch support is admirable. That support continues with Game Update #8.

You can read about the full update over at Titanfall’s website. I’ll be highlighting two new additions today. Frontier Defense (a co-op horde mode) and Ranked Play.

In Frontier Defense, you and three friends will be tasked with holding off waves of enemies as you protect a “vital objective.”
Frontier Defense is playable on all Titanfall maps including DLC. Respawn showed off the new mode in a livestream earlier today and it looks like a lot of fun. You can set-up automated machine guns, call in your Titans right where you want them and blast enemies from a hovering drop ship.

Respawn also highlighted the types of enemies you will fight in Frontier Defense. “Hordes of Grunts and Spectres, stealthy Sniper Spectres and Cloak Drones, explosive Suicide Spectres and Nuclear Titans, ranged Mortar Titans, and even melee-resistant Arc Titans!”

Ranked Play will let you see how you stack up against your friends and other players. Respawn has an interesting take on Ranked Play, and has decided against a separate playlist. Instead, you will get a Rank Chip. Respawn describes the Rank Chip as “like an expensive pedometer.” The Rank Chip gives you a few challenges/goals to accomplish. Meet them and you’ll earn a new rank. Then a new set of goals will be presented to you.

What kind of stats will be tracked? The obvious ones include kills, deaths, flag captures, etc. Respawn will be testing the feature first, though. Gen 10 players are being invited into the Ranked Play beta. Each of them will get five invites to bring some friends in as well. The beta is expected to last through the rest of the month. After that, players ranked 32 and higher can access their Rank Chip.

I like Respawn’s idea. It keeps the game’s population from being too fragmented by tons of playlists. We’ll see if it works once it fully launches sometime next month.

The upcoming update comes with a lot more including new Black Market stuff, game modes and achievements. You can read more about all of that here.
