Not completely anyways. Outside of the Chaos Warriors Race Pack, Creative Assembly hasn’t talked much about Total War: Warhammer’s DLC. That changes today. And the news is good. For the most part.
The developers tooted their own horn about free DLC in past Total War games and said to expect more of the same for Total War: Warhammer. That means new units, new heroes and even new playable races.
Creative Assembly dove deeper into detail in a blog post today.
“Perhaps most importantly for long-term replayability, you can also expect to see the occasional new Legendary Lord who will shake up a race’s strategic potential in interesting new ways. Last but not least, towards the end of the year we will add a new playable race to the game, including new Legendary Lords, magic items, quest chains, and units.”
Here’s an image that gives us an idea of what to expect free DLC wise. It could change, but it’s a rough outline.
As for premium DLC? It isn’t going away. And we shouldn’t expect it to. Creative Assembly described what some of these premium DLCs would look like.
Lord packs – The developers describe these packs as focusing on a “specific rivalry or conflict from the Warhammer Lore.”
– 2 new playable Legendary Lords with their own narrative quest chains, campaign bonuses and quest items.
– 2 new Lords to serve as generals.
– A new unique Unit.
– New elite Units of Renown*. (These units are elite versions of existing units. They may be themed after a specific Lord pack or have upgraded stats.)
Race packs – Pretty self-explanatory. New playable races added to the Grand Campaign and Multiplayer. And the race-specific units, buildings, technology and more that go with a race. Creative Assembly does note that the new race may either be a completely new race, or an existing non-playable race from the core game.
Check out the rest of Creative Assembly’s blog post for more including Campaign packs (adds a Challenge Campaign themed around an event from Warhammer Lore).
Creative Assembly’s approach to DLC for Total War: Warhammer will be interesting to watch. This is the first entry in a planned trilogy, so you know they will hold races, heroes and legendary lords for the next entries. What race do you want to see them add in the months following the game’s release?

Wondering why the dislike ratio is a little higher on this video compared to others? Gamers aren’t huge fans of preorder DLC. And I’m not either. If the content is ready, ship it for everybody. Don’t force it with pre-orders or as premium DLC.
