Remember the wildlings scaling the wall at Castle Black? The two giants? Now imagine that episode on an IMAX screen. HBO is partnering with IMAX theaters to show the final two episodes of Game of Thrones on IMAX screens starting January 23. A bonus? You also get a look at the trailer for season five.
“On January 23, 2015, HBO will become the first television network to feature its programming in IMAX® theatres, showing two episodes from season four of Game of Thrones followed by the eagerly anticipated worldwide debut of an exclusively created sneak-peek trailer for IMAX of season five. The episodes will be digitally re-mastered into the immersive IMAX® format and will be released for an exclusive one-week engagement in upwards of 150 IMAX theatres across the country’s top markets through January 29.”
This begs the question, what took so long? If there has ever been a show that demanded the IMAX treatment, it’s HBO’s Game of Thrones. It has an epic feel, and why wouldn’t you want to to see the dragon’s full-grown in IMAX? The battle between the Hound and Brienne? Life-size please.
For now, it’s the final two episodes, ‘The Watchers on the Wall’ and ‘The Children.’ No plans have been announced for additional episodes, but it is hard not see HBO continuing this in some form.
The Game of Thrones IMAX run is pure promotion. Fans get the epic scale, and HBO gets to tout the episodes as it leads into the season five launch sometime in April.
What do you think? Will you snap up tickets to see the assault on Castle Black?
