Nintendo is Thinking About New Hardware – What Would You Like to See?

The Associated Press recently talked to Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto about a host of topics. During the chat, the AP asked Miyamoto if he was already thinking about new hardware.

Here’s Miyamoto’s response:

“We’re focused on providing a robust line-up of Wii U software for next year. It seems like we’ve managed to do that this year and people are very happy with what we’ve done on Wii U. For the time being, our focus is on the Wii U hardware, but Nintendo as a whole has groups working on ideas for new hardware systems. While we’re busy working on software for the Wii U, we have production lines that are working on ideas for what the next system might be.”

News of Nintendo already working on a new system isn’t all that surprising, but the response does confirm they are looking into it. You can bet Microsoft and Sony already have some people sitting down thinking about the next iteration of the Xbox and Playstation.

At least, I hope so. I better not be playing Xbox One games in 2024.

Miyamoto also talked about Zelda, Star Fox and Amiibo. Check out the full interview for more.

What would you like to see Nintendo do for its next piece of hardware?

I like what they have done over the past year or so. Their first party software continues to be popular. But, third party support remains an obstacle for Nintendo. This could be addressed with more powerful hardware to make porting easier.

But, Nintendo has proven over the past two generations (Wii and Wii U) that they are about creating unique titles more than powerful hardware. I do think Nintendo should do both, and ultimately need to do both.

Tell me what you think Nintendo should do better. Focus more on hardware? Advertising? Games? Let me know in the comments.
