Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s New Engine Is Looking Nice

The return of Captain Price is enough to get any Call of Duty fan pumped. But a new engine giving the franchise a much-needed bump in the visuals department? Just when you think you’re done with Call of Duty, Activision pulls you right back in. Let’s roll the trailer.

Man, Captain Price is such a cool character. The new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare engine looks slick, and one graphical feature stands out. Check out the cloth flapping from the helicopter rotor wash at 0:44, and the plane ramp opening at 0:50. Everything from lighting to rocks on the ground get a boost with the new engine.

The folks at Digital Foundry went hands-on with the game and came away impressed. That trailer above? It was captured on a PlayStation 4 Pro according to Digital Foundry.

The whole article is worth the read, and here’s a little snippet talking about what this new toolset means for the future of the franchise:

One of the key objectives with the latest engine is to help lay the foundation for the future of the Call of Duty series, with initial work starting on the revamp as long as five years ago. Going forward, Infinity Ward’s work will be shared across studios such as Sledgehammer and Raven Games, where there has already been a healthy collaborative history. Additionally, with a projected 2020 release date for the next-gen consoles, logically we should see the work seen here transition to the new hardware and evolve further across the years, while also being able to handle cross-gen duties more elegantly than the legacy COD titles that straddled the generations.

Digital Foundry also touches on how the new engine gives Call of Duty studios the horsepower needed to deliver bigger worlds while still keeping the impressive detail intact. Which should be handy if Call of Duty keeps the Battle Royale mode introduced in Black Ops 4.

Call of Duty: WWII brought the boots back to the ground. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is bringing the aesthetic back to its roots, with a new engine. And I can’t wait to see what Infinity Ward deliver.
