Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s Gunsmith Teases In-Depth Customization, But How Much?

Weapon customization isn’t new, but we don’t often see it as in-depth as the Gunsmith in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare appears to be. A short Twitter video shows a montage of changes to an M4 including different barrels, stocks, grips, sights, magazines, and more.

A blog post from Activision says Assault Rifles typically have nine areas to change: Muzzle, Lasers, Optic, Stock, Rear Grip, Magazine, Underbarrel, Barrel, or a Perk. That’s a lot of customization, but it appears to go even deeper than that. A few of the variants in the short video could be considered SMGs in-game.

First, here’s a variant that keeps the M4 in its Assault Rifle style.

An M4 Assault Rifle variant.

Now let’s look at a couple of smaller variants.

Another smaller variant of the M4.

You can see the M4 is much shorter and looks to be missing its stock. These M4s are often called M4 Pistols/AR Pistols. You can check out a civilian model here.

Now, maybe the new variants are for show – but a YouTube video from TheGamingRevolution earlier this month with a leaked weapons list suggests there’s an attachment/perk that takes an Assault Rifle and allows you to use it as an SMG. That lines up with the smaller variants we see in the Twitter video today.

TheGamingRevolution also says the flip side works as well, at least in the case of the AUG. Its base variant is an SMG, but it can be turned into an AR.

The AR-to-SMG is still speculation, but today’s video along with the earlier leak is pointing towards it being true. We’ll know for sure next week when Infinity Ward does its big multiplayer reveal for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
