Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Embraces Community With Cross-Play, Free DLC

The days of a Call of Duty with a season pass are over. Every Call of Duty: Modern Warfare DLC will be free. That’s not the only crazy news today. Cross-play support (PC and console) is coming too.

Here’s what Patrick Kelly, Infinity Ward co-Studio Head and Creative Director, had to say.

“Every design decision has been made with our players in mind. With the launch of Modern Warfare, we’re taking steps to unite the community. First, we plan for Modern Warfare to be played together across PC and console through cross-play support. Second, we’re eliminating the traditional season pass, so that we can deliver more free maps and content as well as post-launch events to all players. This is just the beginning – there’s much more to come.”

No more season pass is a big deal, and introducing cross-play support is fantastic. I hope its support across PS4/Xbox One/PC and not just between each console and PC (Xbox One/PC and PS4/PC).

I’m surprised Activision opted against a flashy event this year. Not only is Infinity Ward hitting the right notes on the community front, but they’re also introducing a new engine to push the franchise forward. All of that news is a big deal for fans of Call of Duty.

While you can’t hate on free DLC, it does raise the question of how much Infinity Ward leans into other monetization strategies. Battle Passes seem to be the go-to these days. As far as cosmetics go, I’m okay with however the developer wants to approach it. Just keep weapons free.

Look for more news on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare at E3. I’ll be looking for how many multiplayer maps are coming at launch and any news on what a free-DLC roadmap looks like.
