The Makers of Hitman Are Creating a “New Universe,” Warner Bros. Publishing

The folks at IO Interactive are making a new game, and it’s not Hitman. Today, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and IOI announced they are entering a worldwide publishing and distribution agreement for a new game coming to consoles and PC.

IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak describes the game as a “new universe” in a statement. (emphasis mine)

“Over the past few years, Warner Bros. has shown us first-hand that they understand and respect our creative vision, and we’re looking forward to continuing this relationship,” said Hakan Abrak, CEO, IO Interactive. “IO Interactive has a proud history of creating compelling characters and universes for our players to enjoy—it’s in our DNA. As we embark on this exciting project to create a new universe for IOI together with Warner Bros., we’re currently looking for ambitious talent to join our team in our Copenhagen and Malmö studios for this extraordinary journey.”

What new game is IO Interactive working on?

We don’t know, but Warner Bros. being the publisher does open up speculation. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment doesn’t often stray from established IPs. A glance at their game list shows a lot of games based on DC Comics, Lord of the Rings, LEGO, and other established entertainment properties.

That’s not to say Warner Bros. doesn’t publish new IPs from time to time. They worked with CD Projekt Red to bring The Witcher 3 to North America. And are doing the same for Cyberpunk 2077. Plus, they worked with IO Interactive before on their Hitman series.

But speculating is fun, and a Deadshot game created by the folks behind Hitman would be pretty awesome.

Development of this “new universe” is in the early stages, and the two IO Interactive studios in Copenhagen and Malmö are on the lookout for more developers.

As for Hitman? The devs are still pushing new content with a new Halloween mission, Elusive Target, and more coming this month.
