Doom Eternal is getting a new release date. The follow-up to 2016’s fantastic Doom is ditching its original November date for a March 20, 2020 release. A Twitter post from id Software announced the news this morning. Why the delay?
“To make sure we’re delivering the best experience – for DOOM Eternal to live up to our standards of speed and polish – we’ve made the decision to extend our launch date by a few months to March 20, 2020.”
The team also touched on a few more changes coming to Eternal’s release. Invasion mode, which lets players enter each other’s game as a demon, is coming in a free update “shortly after launch.” The Nintendo Switch version is also getting pushed back with a release some time “after the other platforms.” A specific date wasn’t given.
The delay makes an already busy spring even busier. March was already getting full with Final Fantasy 7 Remake (March 3), Watch Dogs: Legion (March 6), and Animal Crossing: New Horizons (March 20). Not to mention one of the most anticipated games ever, Cyberpunk 2077, comes out just a couple of weeks later on April 16. Plus, there are all the games set for early 2020 releases we don’t know specific dates about yet like Nioh 2, Rainbow Six Quarantine, Dying Light 2, and plenty more.
With new hardware coming next holiday season, everyone is rushing out their final games before we transition to cross-gen and fully into PS5/Xbox Scarlett development.
